Overview

It is the responsibility of the Enterprise Data Specialist (EDS) to maintain the accuracy of pertinent internal and external sources of market data including security and issuer reference data (terms and conditions, descriptive data, fundamental data, etc.), credit ratings, prices/valuations and other sources of market data used within Western Asset’s global organization.

In addition, the EDS should understand a broad spectrum of different types of market data across different types of instruments to assist in analysis, interpretation and definition of policies regarding market data including resolving more complex issues.  The specialist should be capable of completing ad-hoc analysis or small projects with relative independence, including coordination and communication with other members of IT, Compliance, Risk and/or Investment Management.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and monitor daily processes associated with the acquisition, derivation/transformation, validation and publishing to various individuals and systems of externally sourced reference data and prices.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly and/or quarterly reporting and controls to ensure accuracy of reference data and prices.
  • Understand the relative importance of different data; address routine data errors or omissions identified through controls; act as a source of expertise for escalation of issues Reference Data and Valuation Specialists (including supporting resources in global offices), and resolve modestly complex issues using sound judgment, but escalate accordingly more complex issues.
  • Expedite and ensure accuracy of reference data and pricing on new securities associated with new trades, corporate actions, new benchmark constituents, and in-kind transfers.
  • Interact with consumers of data throughout the firm including Compliance, Operations, Risk and Investment staff; research and respond to questions about specific data, data sources, and/or procedures.
  • Work closely with data providers/vendors to challenge prices or other reference data and follow through with vendors to arrive at appropriate resolution; develop alternative approaches for dealing with data issues as an interim measure while awaiting vendor resolution.
  • Participate in periodic data source/vendor quality reviews; research, evaluate and document new potential sources of reference data and/or prices.
  • Generate reports for monitoring quality of reference data/prices for use by management, Pricing Committee, and Operations (Sub) Committee; enhance reports and recommend enhancements as appropriate.
  • Support regulatory, internal and financial audits by providing data and/or information on process.
  • Assist in devising workflow and procedures for the creation, maintenance and quality control of market data and valuations, across a variety of security types and reference data types, in conjunction with the development of IT solutions, and the testing/validation thereof.
  • Assist in evaluating data vendor data and files for quality and for mapping into Western Asset systems.
  • Create original required documentation related to process, errors or issues and maintain as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and/or experience with multiple of the following types of data: Security Characteristics; NRSRO Credit Ratings; Pricing & Benchmarks.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with multiple of the following security types: Government/Sovereign Bonds; Corporate Bonds (Investment Grade, High Yield); Municipal Bonds; Derivatives (Futures, Options, Swaps); Mortgages (Agency, Non-Agency); Emerging Market Bonds; Inflation-Linked Bonds.
  • Expertise with relevant Bloomberg terminal usage for research of reference data and pricing.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Access and SQL.
  • 3 or more years of securities industry experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, proactive, with the ability to perform in a fast-paced, high-pressure, team environment.

 

Academic Qualifications (minimum requirements):

 

Undergraduate degree in Finance or a relevant field or equivalent work experience; advanced degree preferred.  Progress towards or completion of CFA material is preferred.
